In the hand

Stout green or brown insects of 15–25 mm with large jumping hind legs and short antennae. On the water they kick hard and sit half-drowned, body awash.

On the river

Only matter where rough, unmown grass runs to the water’s edge. A warm wind blowing off a meadow in the afternoon is the signal; fish tight to the grassy bank.
