In the hand
A small grey-fawn sedge about 10 mm long with roof-shaped wings. Females carry a bright green ball of eggs at the tip of the abdomen, which is the surest way to know them. Swarms drift over the water like smoke.
On the river
The first sedge of the year and one of the few that hatches by day. Hatches are dense, local and brief, a fortnight at most on any one river, commonly in mid to late April.
